Barefoot Power has appointed z02 to lead development of its Mini Grid Designer (MGD) application. MGD is a software tool to assist engineers to design micro-hydro electricity generation systems. Micro-hydro systems are deployed in "off-grid", usually in 3rd world & developing countries.

The application is a web/desktop application hydrid (Desktop 2.0), deployed in the Flash (SWF) format. It will cover all aspects of the project design; from hydraulics, electrics, power distribution, product selection & financials. In addition to complex data calculations, the application will feature real time mapping & 2D technical drawing capabilities.

MGD will be developed using predominantly open-source softwares, including mySQL 5, Open Laszlo 4, MapServer & GeoServer.
